ChIPS building hope, connection, and resilience for young people with chronic illness

For young people living with chronic illnesses, life can feel isolating.

The Chronic Illness Peer Support (ChIPS) program offers a vital lifeline, providing a space where these young individuals can find camaraderie, build resilience, and share their experiences with peers who truly understand.

ChIPS is designed to connect young people facing similar health challenges, helping them navigate their journeys together.

More than just a support group, ChIPS fosters growth in areas such as managing medical needs, improving mental health, and building emotional resilience.

Lucy, a clinical psychologist and ChIPS facilitator, explains the importance of peer support:

“Many of these young people feel isolated, especially with the gap between pediatric and adult services. They often travel long distances for treatment, making consistent connection difficult."

Through ChIPS, participants learn they aren’t alone and connect with others who share similar struggles.

Emily, a ChIPS participant, shares, “I’ve made amazing friends here, we play games, share our experiences, and have a lot of fun together. It helps to meet people that have the same challenges as you, they understand a bit more about what you’re going through so they can help you as well."

ChIPS also supports families, with many parents finding comfort in connecting with others in similar situations.

Thanks to donations from 92.7 MIX FM’s Give Me 5, ChIPS received $97,513 in funding, enabling the program to expand and reach more young people and families.

This support helps run sessions that foster resilience and joy, ensuring participants feel supported and empowered.

Lucy emphasises, “Without donor contributions, programs like ChIPS wouldn’t exist. These donations allow us to help young people thrive.”

Every dollar brings us closer to a world where no young person or family faces their health battles alone.
