Wishlist’s $30,000 refurbishment of the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU) at Nambour Hospital is making a “huge difference” to patients thanks to the increased privacy and more user-friendly set up according to Linda Pallett, Birthsuite Nurse Unit Manager.

Providing specialised care to women experiencing early miscarriage or foetal loss, the MAU is a lifeline for many local mothers and their partners who receive support, counseling and guidance by a dedicated team that includes an Obstetric Registrar and a midwife.

The refurbishment has extended the working space and storage facilities as well as enhanced the surroundings to become a more welcoming area.  Linda acknowledged the funding provided by Wishlist which enabled the renovation of the Unit saying it has been especially beneficial for women and their partners experiencing loss who deserve a quiet place offering privacy and respect.

“We are now able to provide a more confidential and speedier service. The fact that we have an office with a separate entrance in which we can counsel women means they do not have to go through the maternity ward to enter the unit. This has made a huge difference and already staff are noticing an improvement in counseling and better flow within our service.”

The MAU also sees women more than 20 weeks pregnant for assessment and management and provides care for patients requiring acute assessment of antenatal concerns or for those in early labour.

The $30,000 renovation was made possible thanks to proceeds of Mix FM’s Give Me 5 For Kids appeal which each year raises in excess of $250,000 for Wishlist to direct to health initiatives benefiting children and families.

The on-air appeal headed by Mix FM is held annually throughout the month of June, and Wishlist’s CEO Lisa Rowe said it is a great example of what can be achieved with the support of the community. “The MAU provides such an important service to families and expectant parents on the Sunshine Coast, and it just goes to show what a significant difference we can make to someone going through a difficult time when we all pull together,” Lisa said.

“Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids raises a huge amount of funds for Wishlist to direct to local paediatric initiatives that have a direct impact on patients, and we are so grateful to their support and that of the wider community who contribute to this appeal year after year.”
