A record $330,623 has been awarded to Sunshine Coast medical researchers who will be announced today as the successful applicants of Wishlist’s 2014 Research Funding Round.
The announcement is being made as part of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Research Day held at the Nambour Hospital auditorium today.
Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said a total of 10 applications were approved, double the five applications funded last year. “The Sunshine Coast is fast becoming a hub of medical research, especially as the new University Hospital nears completion, and we are excited to announce that Wishlist’s research funding increased by 91 percent from last year,” Lisa said.
“The 10 winners were approved in three categories; Experienced, Novice and Early Career, which is wonderful in that it gives both veteran and upcoming medical researchers the opportunity to further their research projects.”
Successful applicants’ projects must have a direct relevance to the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s strategic direction and an impact at a local level on service delivery and patient care.
Lisa said she was impressed by the quality of the applications and excited about the potential medical breakthroughs these research projects will deliver to the Sunshine Coast. The winners include:
Experienced Applicants
• A/Prof Johan van den Bogaerde – $45,500.
Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) for Chronic Active Ulcerative Colitis (FOCUS Study): A Randomised Double Blind Controlled Study of Efficacy & Safety.
Early Career Applicants
• Dr Rebecca Magee – $19,440
Investigating the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm.
• Dr Alexander Willson – $20,000
Clinical Outcomes of Moderate to High Surgical Risk Patients with Severe aortic stenosis in the era of transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
• Ms Sally Horsley – $19,770.20

Novice Applicants
