Where Are They Now? Kim's Story

A Life-Changing Diagnosis and the Road to Recovery

Last year, we met Kim Power, a man who defied all odds on his road to recovery and left a legacy that continues to inspire others on a similar journey. Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition where the immune system attacks the nerves, the 70-year-old grandfather from Buderim faced an unimaginable battle. Kim was completely paralysed overnight—unable to walk, talk, eat, or move—and doctors didn’t expect him to survive.

However, through sheer determination and the support of medical professionals, Kim slowly began rebuilding his neural pathways. After nearly two years of intense recovery, Kim achieved what many thought impossible—he walked out of Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) just before Christmas 2024.

Giving Back: Kim’s Impact on Others’ Recovery

During his hospital stay, Kim chose to share his story, helping Wishlist raise crucial funds for three power wheelchairs. These wheelchairs have since transformed the lives of many patients striving to regain mobility, including young father Chris Perry. For patients like Chris, these chairs provide a sense of independence during a challenging recovery. Kim’s story has given others the strength, resolve, and hope to overcome their own health crises.

Since leaving SCUH, Kim has continued his journey with unwavering commitment. He attends Nambour Hospital’s Day Rehab Service three times a week, following a rigorous physiotherapy routine. Today, he can walk with the assistance of a frame and has regained significant movement in his arms and legs.

A Message of Resilience and Hope

Kim’s journey has been long, but his progress is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the vital role of community support. Kim shared, “It’s been a long journey, but I’ve made a hell of a lot of progress and it’s all thanks to the health staff who helped me through this. Every day is different, but I never give up.”

Kim’s story reminds us all of the importance of perseverance, and his message to others facing their own challenges is simple but powerful: “Be strong and never, ever give up.” Wishlist’s efforts to provide essential equipment, like power wheelchairs, are made possible through the generosity of donors. Your support can help more patients like Kim and Chris regain their independence and thrive.
