World champion paralympians, canoeing stalwarts and paddling up-starts will converge on Lake Kawana for the Sunshine Coast’s first-ever triple charity fundraising event in December.

October 21 marked the official launch of the inaugural Waterlife event which will feature a day packed with outrigger canoeing and paddling races to raise funds for Wishlist, EndED and No Limits Adaptive Paddling.

It is the first time three Sunshine Coast charities have combined forces for a regatta-style fundraiser which is expected to become a legacy sporting event in the region.

“Despite the fact that there will be Olympic kayakers fresh from Rio, world-recognised paralympians flying in from across the state, and several surf club teams taking part - we’ll also have first-timers, corporate challengers and a great mix of ages and abilities,” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said.

“Waterlife is about the community coming together for a family-friendly fun day out by Lake Kawana, being entertained by thrilling races and most importantly, supporting three dedicated local charities.”

Adaptive Paddling Head Coach Gayle Mayes said Waterlife featured a unique sporting and event format which had never been seen before in the region.

“There’s no other event like this in Australia,” Ms Mayes said.

“No-one combines these crafts – outrigger canoes and skis - in one event. It will also be the largest ski event on the Sunshine Coast.”

EndEd founder Mark Forbes said Waterlife was an opportunity to create a sense of pride and identity while building on the Coast’s reputation as one of the most active and healthy communities in the state.

“I have no doubt the community will love Waterlife,” Mr Forbes said.

With funds raised on the day, EndED plans to work towards their goal of building an EndED House on the Coast for people suffering eating disorders, and their families, to access medical specialists, counselling, educational resources and ongoing support under one roof.

Wishlist will direct its fundraising tally to local cancer services for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service and an endoscopic ultrasound which aids in assessing cancer of the bile ducts, oesophagus and pancreas. No Limits Adaptive Paddling plans to grow their ground-breaking program changing the lives of people with physical disabilities.
