Sunshine Coast politicians will be swapping their suits and seats in Parliament for Speedos and paddles ahead of collaborative charity event Waterlife next month.

Federal MP for Fisher Andrew Wallace, MP for Buderim Steve Dickson and Sunshine Coast Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray have formed the Pollie Paddlers team to compete in the Corporate Outrigging Race on December 3 at Lake Kawana.

The inaugural event will raise funds for three Sunshine Coast charities - Wishlist, endED and No Limits Adaptive Paddling.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said the first-time event was attracting key Sunshine Coast identities, Paralympians, Olympic speed kayakers and more than 40 corporate teams.

“Waterlife is shaping up to be an incredible day,” Ms Rowe said.

“Not only do we have the support of these influential MPs and Councillors willing to give outrigging a crack for a good cause, but we have major businesses powering this event like Coastline BMW.

“Waterlife is a regatta-style charity event, the first of its kind seen on Lake Kawana.

“We will have a corporate marquee, Mix FM broadcasting live on the day, a jumping castle and fairy floss for the kids and of course, all the entertainment of the outriggers and skis racing.

“Waterlife is about the community coming together for an active and family-friendly fun day out by Lake Kawana, and most importantly, supporting three dedicated local charities.”

Athlete and swimming champion Lisa Curry will also be part of the event as she captains a corporate outrigging team for Fernwood Fitness Maroochydore.



“Corporate teams can still register – all you need is five people and we’ll provide the outrigger canoe, steerer and two training session prior to December 3,” Ms Rowe added.

Adaptive Paddling Head Coach Gayle Mayes said Waterlife featured a unique sporting and event format which had never been seen before in the region.

“There’s no other event like this in Australia,” Ms Mayes said.

“No-one combines these crafts – outrigger canoes and skis - in one event. It will also be the largest ski event on the Sunshine Coast.”

EndEd founder Mark Forbes said Waterlife was an opportunity to create a sense of pride and identity while building on the Coast’s reputation as one of the most active and healthy communities in the state.

“I have no doubt the community will love Waterlife,” Mr Forbes said.
