Mission to spread awareness for head and neck cancer

27 Jul 2024

The Sunshine Coast Head and Neck Cancer fundraiser at Headland Golf Club on July 13th was a fantastic evening of degustation, wine pairing, raffles, an energetic dancefloor and of course supporting a good cause.

In its third year, the fundraiser ran by the Sunshine Head and Neck Cancer Support Group raised over $25,000 which will be kindly donated to Wishlist, Bloomhill and the Head and Neck Australia to continue the support of local head and neck cancer patients.

The support group was established in mid-2021 to not just offer solace, but to raise awareness and provide support to better the lives of those navigating this heartbreaking journey.

Proud Wishlist Centre volunteer and member of the support group, Julie-Ann Lewis, advocates the importance in spreading awareness, asking questions, and supporting others through their cancer journey.

“We try and meet once a month to have a coffee and a chat for anyone that wants to come along and ask questions, talk to people who have had treatment and about the sorts of things they are going through,” Julie-Ann says.

“It helps your journey when you can talk to people who have dealt with it themselves.

"If someone struggles to speak themselves, guests are welcome to come along and speak and ask questions for them.

“I think support is very important for people who just don’t have family or partners around.

“It’s important to get the awareness out there for people to check even the simple things like a lump or an ulcer on your mouth.”
