Maggie honoured at Cancer Centre

16 Jul 2021

Two new 3D lung cancer models are now being used in the Adem Crosby Centre to help explain diagnoses to patients with cancer and their families who are receiving care at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The models were purchased by the hospital foundation Wishlist thanks to generous family and friends of Maggie Gavin who raised $2,625 in memory of the vibrant and fun-loving Noosa resident

Maggie was diagnosed in 2019 with stage 4 lung cancer and was always so cheerful, optimistic and a joy to look after, until she passed earlier this year.

Nurse Cassie Dickens with John Gavin and Dr Bryan Chan.

Maggie’s husband John was able to meet with the Adem Crosby Centre team recently to present the models and thank them for their care.

Nurse Cassie Dickens said the models will help health staff to provide a visual explanation of where cancer treatment might affect a patient’s lungs, or where a tumour is located.

“Maggie was always keen to be well informed so I think she would be very pleased that we purchased these educational tools so she can help other patients with lung cancer,” said Maggie’s oncologist Dr Chan.

“We are sourcing another four models so we will have six in total honouring Maggie’s memory.”

Thank you to John and the Gavin family and all of Maggie’s donors who supported the purchase of this equipment.
