Two Sunshine Coast mothers have raised $2,000 for Wishlist to help ease the burden on parents whose children are unexpectedly admitted to hospital.

Sam Dutton and Megan Sorrenson held a ladies dinner to raise money for a Playstation and games for the paediatric area of Nambour’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

“I have four kids so visits to Emergency and the Children’s Ward is not uncommon,” Ms Dutton said.

“I have firsthand knowledge of just how hard it can be to keep kids still and calm, especially when in Emergency,” she said.

Cindy Roker from Department of Emergency Medicine said the donation will offer a welcome distraction.

“It’s very hard for kids to understand why they have to stay still or wait for test results, so having something they can focus on that’s not hospital related will be a huge help for them as a patients, but also for their parents and our medical staff,” Ms Roker said.

“The charity afforded to Wishlist by every day members of the public is incredibly humbling,” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said.

“Sam has set a wonderful example to the Sunshine Coast community that absolutely anyone can fundraise on behalf of Wishlist for a cause close to their heart,” she said.

The fundraising efforts have also paid for toiletry bags for parents of children on the Paediatric Ward.

Children’s Nursing Unit Manager Anne-Maree Holmes said the bags will be gratefully received.

“Parents always put their kids first, but even more so when they are sick or injured and in hospital,” Mrs Holmes said.

“Having a pre-packed bag with basics like toothbrush and toothpaste, soap and moisturizer can make a massive difference to a Mum or Dad spending nights by their child’s bedside,” she said.

$1,000 raised from the lunch organized and hosted by Sam Dutton was also donated to the niece of one of her colleagues currently battling cancer.
