For Sandy Lewis, the work of Dove Palliative Care Unit in Caloundra is firmly etched in her heart.

The president of the Velvet Country Music Club recently donated $6000 on behalf of the 140-strong club to the Unit which cares for patients nearing their end-of-life.

Ms Lewis said the money had been raised through an annual fundraising concert earlier this month, sausage sizzles and raffles.

“Our donations to Dove Cottage (as it was formerly known) started three years ago by some people that had friends associated with being in Dove Cottage,” Ms Lewis said.

“Over the years we have been touched by a lot of our members having to be in Dove Cottage palliative care. We’ve lost four people just in a couple of years through cancer that were assisted by Dove Cottage.

"My own mum was here in 2004 and the care that was given to her was amazing.”

Ms Lewis said the Velvet Country Music Club was proud to support a local service.

“We love fundraising for Dove Cottage - it’s a great cause,” she said.

“We are a non-profit country music club and we wanted to donate back to the community in some form.”

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said a portion of the Club’s donation would go towards extending the music therapy program at the unit.

“100 per cent of the donation will be used for the needs of the Dove Palliative Care Unit,” Ms Rowe said.

“Currently the music therapist sees patients four hours a fortnight and we hope that this can be extended to four hours each week.”

Nurse Unit Manager Clodagh Barwise-Smith said music therapy made a remarkable difference to patients nearing their final days, and their families.

Wishlist also provides funds to the Dove Palliative Care Unit for end-of-days life recordings which serves as a priceless memento for family members, bereavement programs, music therapy, the Delta Therapy Dogs program and specialised equipment.
